We are on the lookout for four Sport Volunteering Ambassadors who want to grow their skills and make a real difference to the student community at The Union and MMU.

The Ambassador roles are a chance to extend your current experience of volunteering with MMU Sport, and give you the platform to share your experiences with students through a number of different avenues.  You’ll get the chance to attend key events throughout the year to provide support to other MMU students, create student-volunteering groups and be a point of contact for students in the organisation and delivery of events.

You will also have the opportunity to take charge of and share your experiences via the MMU Sport Volunteering Twitter account, MMU Sport Volunteering Facebook group and on the MMU Sport blog. In addition, you get to be a positive presence for MMU Sport Volunteering at University open days, talks and in-lecture shout-out, sharing what you do and your enthusiasm with others. The roles run during the academic year from September through to the end of May.

You don’t have to be studying a sport-related course to be a sport volunteer or a Sport Volunteering Ambassador, and this year’s Ambassadors have been up to loads of different things, and have blogged about their experiences.

Harriet Bell, one of this year’s Ambassadors said:

“Prior to coming to university, I wasn’t involved in many sports…once I reached university, I took part in MMU Canoe and more recently have joined MMU Mountaineering. I am studying Biology and like watching documentaries, cooking, and getting outdoors as much as possible. Last year I volunteered for MMU Sport as a Sport and Physical Activity Rep, and helped to organise and run the women’s only event ‘Shake It Off’ and was involved with Meet the Guide Dogs and Zone out Zone, along with promoting MMU Sport at stalls.

This year I wanted to become even more involved with MMU Sport, so applied for the role of Sports Volunteering Ambassador. Personally, I find volunteering in sport to be very rewarding - whether it is telling a new student they can take part in their favourite sport at MMU, or helping someone who has never found their place in sport to find something that they really enjoy. I have never been very into the more competitive team sports myself, and want to help those like me discover all the other sports and ways they can get involved.”

Dan Roberts was a Sports Volunteering Ambassador - check out what he got up to in his vlog:

Becca O’Hanlon, Sport Volunteering Coordinator said of the opportunity:

“This year the ambassadors have been a real asset to the sport volunteering programme.  They have promoted and represented many aspects of sports volunteering to their fellow students and club members, and they have taken lead roles at some of our key events throughout the year, including Battle of the North, Soccerex and Conference Cup Finals.  They have also had the opportunity to experience new things, such as developing and running a campaign and attending a BUCS conference - all of which has helped develop the sports volunteering programme, but also developed themselves as individuals.

After this success, I’d like the next cohort of ambassadors to develop and progress in the areas they have an interest - that might be social media, event management or running a campaign, or volunteer management.  You just need to be passionate and enthusiastic! “
