You may have heard through the grapevine/your emails that there is a NUS election happening at The Union, but are you one of the people scratching your head thinking: ‘what is the NUS election?’

WELL – here are some answers for you

WHAT IS THE NUS ELECTION
Every year students are elected through a democratic vote to become NUS delegates and attend the NUS conference.

WHAT IS A NUS DELEGATE
A NUS delegate is someone who will attend the NUS conferences in 2019. They will elect the officers and committee members for the NUS, help set the direction of the entire organisation, and review the work the NUS has done in the past year.

WHAT IS NUS CONFERENCE
The conference is where all the delegates go to do all that stuff – there’s ten conferences with the NUS National Conference happening in April and also conferences for Liberation campaigns, such as Women’s Conference, Black Students Conference and Trans* Students Conference.

It’s basically where the national union of students meet up, and set their goals for the next year.

WHAT IS NUS
As well as providing students the legendary amount of discounts they do, the National Union of Students is a national version of your students’ union, where they try and make life for students as good as they possibly can. For example, the NUS are the reason you don’t have to pay council tax as a full time student, and also why you get your deposit back after moving out of your student accommodation (if you don’t burn down the house that is).

HOW DOES THIS ACTUALLY AFFECT ME
This affects you as a student, because the decisions made at the national level can and will directly affect you at a local and personal level. With national issues such as Brexit, it’s good to have a union that will try and support the entire student body of the country in uncertain times. (Plus, you want to keep those discounts right?)
