YHA is a Times Top 100 charity that provides volunteering opportunities for young people across England and Wales.
Welfare Volunteers help everyone to get the most out of their camp experience by listening, supporting and offering advice. They help build individuals self-esteem and provide practical advice to deal with problems.
Spending time away from home and being in a new situation can be a stressful time and Welfare Volunteers help volunteers and campers get the best out their camp experience and overcome any challenges they may have.
Being able to relate to young people and really understand their concerns are vital and also being able to make recommendations to the other members of staff. You should have a proactive approach to building relationships and be perceptive to the feelings of others.
In this role you will support a group or individual during the daytime activities so be prepared for busy days.
What skills do I need? Apply for this role if you have previous experience of supporting young people to develop new skills and perspectives through mentoring or counselling. This is a hands-on role where you will be buddying a group or individuals so you should be proactive in building relationships and enjoy being around young people. You should be patient and encouraging, and able to empower and motivate others. You should also be perceptive, an excellent communicator and work well in a team.
What will I gain? You will gain excellent experience and develop your skills in mentoring children and young people in a residential setting, leadership and communication. Make fantastic memories and new friends. We can give you a reference and certificate. You will receive free food and accommodation whilst at camp and travel expenses up to a maximum of £120.
Training and Support: All volunteers attend a training course at YHA Edale (Derbyshire) on 6-8 July 2018. You will receive training specific to the Welfare role and also in safeguarding, behaviour management, leadership, communication skills and best practice relating to supporting young people in a residential setting. At camp you will be supported by the Camp Manager and Deputy Manager.
