Manchester Metropolitan University Students' Union

ANNA WELSH President

ABOUT ANNA

Hi everyone, I’m Anna and I’m your Students Union President for this year! Last year I was your first ever Societies & Development Officer and I loved working with all the students into societies so much I decided to run to be your president so I could work with even more of you. I graduated in 2018 from a Mathematics degree and whilst I was a student I was heavily involved with societies. Last year during my role I got into Cheerleading and competed alongside the Level 1 team, it was an amazing experience and I hope to continue with them this year. If there’s ever anything you need please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!

MORE ABOUT MY ROLE

The President is The Union’s lead officer who has a chief role in representing students at Manchester Met and they line-manage the other Officers. They have a huge say on the direction we take on key issues and campaigns aimed at improving the overall student experience. The President champions the work of The Union, leads our public image and is a governor at the University to influence key decisions for students.

JANUARY UPDATE

It’s 2020- where did all that time go??

The past few months have been busy for me, from attending lots of meetings with the university to making progress on my projects, I’ve definitely not been bored!

I’ve managed to organise for new free sanitary dispensers in all the toilets in the SU, part of my goal is to make sure everyone knows that anyone of any gender can menstruate and that period poverty can affect us all due to this. I’m also working towards events for this term including a roller disco and a self-defence seminar! Keep an eye out for exciting things coming up.

MY GOALS

REACHING OUT TO STUDENTS - in progress

This is something I’m going to work on during term one. Making sure I’m out on the campus and talking to as many students as possible. I’ll bring a hot topic question with me so if you have anything you’d like me to ask and find the answer to- let me know! Just look out for a red banner with ‘Student Officers’ on it and you’ll know I’m nearby.

UNION BAR DOOR - complete

The door into the Union from the bar is now fully accessible again! Please don’t hesitate to let me know if there are any issues with it though as I will endeavor to keep it in working order.

BIRLEY WALKWAY 24 HOUR ACCESSIBLE - complete

This is something I wanted to do to make our campus safer. It means that now students are able to use a well-lit path when returning to their halls late at night, feel free to get in touch with any questions or ideas on making the campus even safer.

LAUNCHING REPORT AND SUPPORT - complete

Last year I was part of the working group for a system called report & support, this is a system for students to use to report on sexual harassment, violence and hate crime on campus. I’m looking forward to seeing the system be launched and how it can better help all MMU students.

GETTING SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM - in progress

I’m currently talking to the university about what we currently have available for students with autism and how we can improve this. I’m also working towards making training for students on how they can help those with autism and events to put on for autism awareness day in April.

DECOLONISING THE CURRICULUM - in progress

I’m currently doing research into decolonisation and what it means to the university experience, I’ll be looking into the ways the University can use this to make the education more inclusive and how this will help our students achieve more.

PERIOD PROJECT - in progress

I’ve ordered dispensers for all the toilets in the Union that will have free sanitary products in them. I am also in the process of setting up a webpage on period poverty which will have a donation page attached to it for anyone wishing to help out. Next I’m going to start working on sustainable periods and things around it, watch this space!
