The Taekwondo team is open to all styles of Taekwondo, having both a practical self-defence side and a sporting side. The club has many high level athletes who also represent their country in the University Student National Squad as well as recreational participants who concentrate more on the non-competitive side of Taekwondo. The squad currently has 24 National Champions, 2 European Champions and 3 World Champions in its competition and league squad.


Coaches and support staff:

The club receive coaching from veteran member and current Student Sport Officer Ross Sharman who is an international intructor and examiner, 4th Degree Black Belt.

Training facilities and times:

Tuesdays 19:00 – 21:00 at the Union

Thursdays 18:30 - 20:30 at the Sugden Sport Centre

MMU Taekwondo is open to everyone and all styles of Taekwondo, we cater to both beginners and advanced, ITF and WT and pride ourselves on being a family. The club is now 7 years old and is the first University club to be invited and attend the Taekwondo World Championships in 2017. The club achieved an incredible 31 medals including 3 World Champions. We have been crowned the British University Taekwondo League (BUTL) champions in 2016 and 2018, Leage Cup winners in 2018, Northwest Champions (2016) and won 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze at the European Championships in 2016. 

We are actively involved in the Union and participate in multuple volunteering opportunities. The club holds the prestigious and award winning annual event Fight Night every December, selling out for all it's 3 years we have raised over £5000 for charities. We have recived many awards from the Union including Sports club of the year, event of the year, committee official of the year, outstanding coach and the Brownhill-Evans Memorial Award. 

We hold a variety of different socials weekly as well as hanging out after most training sessions. We go on an annual club holiday every year, in the past we have been to Spain, Tenerife and Bulgaria. We are one big family here at MMU Tae Kwon-do and we would love it if you joined us!



We teach self-defence and Taekwondo training syllabus as well as offering competitive opportunities for patterns and sparring.

Our £90 yearly Membership covers all training sessions throughout the year, insurance, entry to all our seminars and all competition entry and travel.

We currently have an Elite Competition Squad, Developmental Competition Squad and a Demo squad. Each of these are open to all grades.

The University expects that students and coaches participating in all activities related to sports clubs will at all times demonstrate respect for:

  • Themselves, other students, university staff, external venue staff, volunteers, coaches, officials and spectators;
  • Laws and culture of the relevant sporting activities;
  • Property of Manchester Met, MMU Sport and any venue they are visiting.

Participants are also expected to:

  • Value their own performances, that of others and not just results;
  • Co-operate with team/club mates, coaches and officials


MMU Sport Clubs Behaviours:

All MMU Sports Club members agree to abide by the behaviours outlined in the non-exhaustive list below:

  • To adhere to the Sports Club Constitution, general rules, regulations and policies of Manchester Met and The Union (which includes, but is not limited to, the Manchester Metropolitan University Student Code of Conduct, University Health and Safety Policies, MMU Sport Code of Conduct and the Code of Conduct for The Union Members);
  • To adhere to the rules and regulations of the relevant sports’ governing body, and where necessary the relevant international federations, agreeing to demonstrate sporting behaviour towards opponents, staff and officials at all times;
  • To be fair, considerate, honest and respectful to the needs of fellow students, staff, volunteers, coaches and visitors to Manchester Met;
  • To respect Manchester Met’s property and that of others (e.g. external facilities and transport providers), and not cause damage to such property or use it for unapproved purposes;
  • To never behave violently where this is outside the rules of the sport or deliberately seek to gain an advantage through cheating, or use prohibited substances;
  • To encourage and guide participants to accept responsibility for their own performance and behaviour;
  • To refrain from any behaviour that brings the Club or Manchester Met into disrepute;
  • To adhere to the rules and regulations in the Student Regulations for use of University Computing Resources and take personal responsibility for their words, images and actions in an online environment;
  • To understand that any ‘welcome’ activity for new club members should be inclusive, non-compulsory, and should not, in the judgement of MMU Sport, make the individuals feel humiliated or degraded;
  • Not act in an unlawful manner;
  • To understand the repercussions of any breaches of these standards.
