Are you passionate about dismantling barriers to academic success?

We’re looking for a knowledgeable and driven manager to enhance inclusivity and equity at Manchester Met. You will lead a team of student staff, to work in partnership with the University to find creative solutions to embedded barriers and help build belonging.

You will also lead the Union’s contribution to the University’s accreditation submissions such as Athena Swan and the Race Equity Charter.

Who are we?

Located in the heart of Manchester, The Union is part business, part charity, part membership body—and central to the student experience at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Our team of around 60 full time and up to 150 part time staff, work alongside elected student leaders to support all aspects of student life. We are committed to supporting all 43,000 of our student members to achieving personal success.

We do this by running a variety of services including sports clubs, societies, change campaigns, volunteering opportunities, student representation and an advice service. We also host events in our conferencing facilities and operate a bar, shop, pub and coffee shop, as well as a range of social spaces and bookable study rooms.

The Union is one of 550 students’ unions across the country. And we’re one of the most exciting—with over 43,000 student members and 100 student groups, a huge range of services and a bold strategy.

What's the job?

At the Union we believe that all students should have the opportunity to thrive during their time at university. Some students are more likely to face barriers that prevent them from making the most of university, particularly those from historically under-served or marginalised communities. We are committed to identifying and dismantling these barriers to involvement with all the university has to offer, promoting the wellbeing and inclusion of all students.

Your role will involve the development of targeted programmes of activity that empower and enable student success, particularly addressing the ‘gaps’ and differences in experience, satisfaction and academic achievement that prevail in higher education.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with significant experience in the field of equity and inclusion, a leader who can motivate a team, work collaboratively and build positive working relationships with external stakeholders.

The role demands creativity and excellent communication skills, being confident managing sensitive conversations or initiatives that help people change their own thinking and practices.
