Law Society

Welcome to Manchester Law School Law Society!

About us:

Welcome to the Manchester Law School Law Society! As previous winners of the Best Academic Society 4 years in a row and one the largest societies at MMU, we offer a variety of events throughout the year to students who are interested in the legal profession. Our goal is to create a network of MMU’s next generation of aspiring lawyers. Furthermore, we aim for our events to be beneficial to student employability and informative on the path to a successful legal career!

It’s not all career driven, however! We also organise fun and engaging socials to help students meet with like-minded individuals and establish a community with examples of fancy dress parties, Junkyard Golfing, Pub crawls and other fun outings! We aim to offer everyone the best student experience at MMU so everyone is welcome from all walks of life!

Membership:

It goes without saying that being a member of the Law Society alone is a fantastic addition to your professional profile, yet, we aim for our members to have opportunities they can be proud to put on their CV!

Our current membership fee is £10 for the year which entitles members to discounts and more!

To become a member, join using this page!

Mooting:

We hope to offer Mooting workshops and promote competitions throughout the year. Whether you’re totally new to mooting and looking to learn!!

Socials:

After an incredibly successful year, we plan for a continued emphasis on the social aspect of our society – it’s in the name, after all!

We intend to host weekly “Catch up” socials where members can meet and converse in a relaxed environment, and then a “big social” once a month that are organised events with loads of fun, games, and surprises taking place at a range of venues!

Trips:

We plan for numerous exciting trips to take place throughout the year! Here’s a selection of previous trips and other trips we are considering:

  • London Trip to the Supreme Court
  • Judge Rider Audience
  • Winter Wonderland
  • Law Firm Tours
  • Prison Tours

Guest Speakers:

This year, we are placing a strong emphasis on Guest Speakers for the society; we feel it would be a fantastic opportunity to have legal professionals come in and offer words of wisdom on the steps to a successful legal career! Just some of the guest speakers we have planned are:

Solicitors/Graduate Recruitment Teams from Law Firms – What better source of advice on how to become a solicitor than those who have already achieved it or reviewers of applications?

MMU Alumni – We feel it would be a great opportunity to have previous students come in and share their stories of how they got to where they are now. Additionally, members can ask advice on the steps to success specifically for an MMU student!

Guest Speakers from other Professions – We recognise that many students at MMU know that they would not like to become a solicitor or barrister, but are unaware of what other doors their LLB degree opens. We’re here to help those students on their search for a career path!

Barristers – We plan on inviting professional barristers in to give talks on the steps to becoming qualified and life as a practicing barrister.

Opportunities post-LLB Talks – We will also host talks on the opportunities available once you have completed your degree. Such as talks from the programme leaders of the LPC, BTC, and LLM!

National Commercial Awareness Competition (BIUCAC) :

This year, we are members of a national commercial awareness competition – the largest of its kind in the UK. We will be hosting a round at MMU with MLS Law Society members only, and the winners shall receive work experience at local Manchester Firms!

But that’s not all, those winners will then go to the London finale and will compete to win work prizes from some of the best firms in the world – we’re talking Clifford Chance, Hogan Lovells, White & Case just to name a few!

Annual Law Ball

Every year we host an annual Law Ball for all law students at MMU which celebrates the success of the law school and its cohort.

After the unfortunate cancellation of the 202 Law Ball, we plan to host the biggest and best ball yet!

Stay tuned for more information!

It’s really easy and we’re here to support you throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Some societies are free to join, whilst others may have a small fee of around £5 to £10 for the whole year.

Your joining fees are then used to cover the running of the society (sometimes there’ll be extra costs if the society offers classes, special events or trips).

Any questions? Drop the society a message or speak to us.

Current Manchester Met students are welcome to join our societies all year round.

Freshers Fair is a particularly great opportunity for you to meet and join our societies in person.

For existing societies, committee members are chosen by members of the society through an online election. Elections take place in March ready for the upcoming academic year, and the role of committee member runs from July to June.

For new societies, the founding members choose their committee to get started.

Fill out this booking form, giving at least one week’s notice to ensure the room is secured. You can request any bookable space in The Union or the University, but first make sure to check the building’s opening hours.

You should definitely wait for confirmation of your booking before spreading the word to your society members.
