Welcome Assistant

£13.68 per hour (holiday pay included)

This is a zero-hours contract designed to offer flexibility around your studies. This specific role is to assist with the delivery of our Welcome Weeks and will typically have 3 shifts of 4 hours.

We’re looking for enthusiastic and reliable student staff to help to make one of the biggest and most memorable weeks of a student’s life brilliant, by being on hand to motivate as well as guide all new Manchester Met students.

Who are we? 

Located in the heart of Manchester, The Union is part business, part charity, part membership body. Operating independently from Manchester Metropolitan University, our aim is to support and represent each one of our student members. Each year our growing team of around 50 full time and up to 100 part time staff, work alongside elected student leaders to make change, improve lives and help fulfil student potential.

The Union is one of 550 students’ unions across the country. And we’re one of the most exciting - with over 38,000 student members and 100 student groups, a huge range of services and a bold strategy.

What's the job? 

You will be part of a key team that helps welcome new students to university during the first few weeks of term, from the beginning of September 2025 to the beginning of October 2025. You could be involved in promoting, delivering, and assisting with a whole range of events, activities and trips including Fresher’s Fair, tours of Manchester, social meetups and many more events lined up.

Main activities / tasks

  • Support the execution of Welcome Week events, from intimate social gatherings and engaging workshops to general entertainment events, ensuring each one runs smoothly and successfully
  • Work closely with a collaborative team to ensure all aspects of the event are covered
  • Be approachable to answer any questions about The Union and the University to support new students settling into university life
  • Lead walking tours of students around Manchester
  • Engage students face-to-face to promote The Union’s Welcome events
  • Make sure that risk assessments and relevant health and safety regulations are followed
  • By example, always promote a positive image of The Union through high personal standards of integrity and professionalism
  • Early morning, evening & weekend work will be required

Qualifications

  • You must be a student of Manchester Metropolitan University for the 2025/2026 academic year

 


 

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a comparable customer facing role

 


 

Knowledge and skills

  • Must be willing to complete mandatory Food Safety, Health & Safety and Licensing training ahead of role commencement. This training will be provided and paid for
  • To attend meetings and training events as required
