Your student officers are coming up with monthly articles for you. All designed to focus on a different theme with the best tips, tricks, and hacks to save you time, money and make your student experience even better.

This month's guide is from Phoebe, your Sports Officer.

Staying healthy is important over the Christmas break and exam period. It can be an isolating time, but there are loads of tips and tricks to help. Health is more than physical, being physically active can help your mental health too.

With exam season around the corner, it's time to implement good habits to start on the right foot.

There’s loads of benefits to your physical health that come from keeping active. By being active you can reduce your risk of diseases, strengthen your bones, and improve your ability to do everyday activities.

You don’t have to do anything strenuous to do physical activities either, low impact sports such as swimming or walking have great health benefits too.

Manchester Met Sport facilitates free sports every week in The Union and other locations as part of their Active Campus free timetable.

Active Campus is a programme ran by the University designed to get you up and about, most of the sessions are free and include loads of different options including Badminton, HIIT, Tennis and more. There’s something for everyone whether you enjoy social sports or a proper workout.

Mental wellness also comes hand in hand with being active. Playing sports can help with stress relief around exam periods, and better sleep and focus.

Doing exercise can help motivate you to revise or help finish that dissertation, and for the rest of the year enjoying being active can help regulate a good mood, release endorphins and up your confidence.

MMU Sport’s got over 45 sports clubs and teams ranging in different levels of physical activity. Loads of the sports that are on offer help students to get out of the city centre and enjoy nature such as kayaking, surfing, or mountaineering.

Loads of you find that escaping the concrete jungle is good for your mental health as it’s a calming environment to de-stress from exams.

There’s also the Equestrian club - lots of members find being around animals helps their mental health and they look forward to going to the stables all week.

The final benefit I’ll highlight is the social and community side of sports. We know being in a student house or halls is an intense environment so it's good to get out of the house and get involved in different groups and meet new people.

People make friends for life through sports teams at university, and there’re varying levels of competitive and non-competitive sports at Manchester Met for you to get involved in some healthy competition with some new people.

Over the holidays try to stay active even when revising. Consider going to Refreshers Fair to see what types of sports are on offer, it is not too late to join in January!

Have a browse on the MMU Sport website to see what is up for grabs, too, or engage on Instagram.
