All the support you need over the winter break

Friday 18-12-2020 - 11:00

You might have some questions or want to know where you can turn for support over the winter break, so we've put all the info you need in one place.

If you want to know about opening times

Want to access The Union’s services or the library over the break? Here’s the opening times:

The Union

The library

Opening times for all other University services can be found here

If you’re looking for info on travelling over the break:

Government guidance is that you shouldn’t make unnecessary journeys. There are some exemptions for Christmas and allowing students to travel home, but we should always adhere to the rules of the tier that we live in. Manchester is in Tier 3.

If you’re looking for things to do:

Christmas Dinner

All Manchester Met students who find themselves in Manchester over the winter break are welcome to spend Christmas Day with The Union. On Friday 25 December from 12:30, join The Union and the University Catering team for the Big Christmas Lunch (served at 13:00) with a range of activities including “rock ‘n’ roll bingo’ and a quiz. The festivities will take place over at the Brooks Building and is completely free of charge. If you are interested in getting involved, please email: mill@mmu.ac.uk and remember to let us know if you've got any dietary requirements.

Christmas Social

Get that festive feeling at the online Christmas Social! If you’re looking to meet new people, play online games or just have a bit of a chat, join the fun on:

Monday 21 December (18:00 – 20:00)

Monday 28 December (18:00 - 20:30)

New Year’s Quiz

Have fun and test your ‘New Year’ knowledge in the University's New Year’s Quiz on Wednesday 30 December (14:00 – 16:00) – there’s prizes up for grabs too!

If you want to know the plans for next term:

For information on when teaching starts, COVID testing, rent reductions and more, head over to the University’s spring term webpage.

If you’re having problems in halls:

For questions or concerns about your halls, email the Student Living team on studentliving@mmu.ac.uk.

If you’re having financial problems:

The University’s Crisis Support is available to help you pay for food, sanitary products and essential medication when you can’t afford them. The best way to get in touch is on the helpline: 0161 247 1045 or you can submit an enquiry on the Digital Student Hub. The application process normally takes five working days.

The Well will still be running over the winter break. You can sign up for their packages of seven days' worth of free hot meals which includes dinner-kits, recipes and online step-by-step cookery classes.

If you’re feeling stressed:

There's 24/7 support available on the University’s new Togetherall site for anyone feeling stressed, anxious or low. This service allows you to talk anonymously to other members and take part in group or 1:1 therapy with trained therapists. You may also find these organisations helpful:

SHOUT: If you're feeling anxious, worried or finding things difficult to cope with, text 'SHOUT' to 85258

Greater Manchester NHS Mental Health Helpline: 0800 953 0285

NHS: 111

Samaritans: 116 123

If you’re looking for counselling:

The University Counselling and Wellbeing team is available Monday-Friday, 11:00-16:00 except on bank holidays. To book an assessment, ring 0161 247 3493 or email counselling@mmu.ac.uk

Remember The Union reopens on 4 January — we can’t wait to welcome you back to a brand-new year.
