Candidates Quizzed for Student Officer Elections Q+A

Friday 28 February saw the candidates for this year’s Student Officer Election questioned prior to the opening of the voting period.

The candidates answered questions from the audience, Vice-Chancellor, Malcolm Press and a selection of questions gathered from Manchester Met Students. They also had the opportunity to deliver an opening statement to the audience and viewers.

Education discussion topics covered academic experience, Education Council, incentivising course rep acitivity and how to combat loneliness. Wellbeing addressed access to mental health services, perception of students in the community and how the university can provide better services to support students through training and live chat support.

The Sports Officer Candidates addressed the topics of making sport more inclusive, issues around accessibility and cost, and how drinking culture can act as a barrier to participation. Societies and Development Officer Candidates faced scrutiny over the current structure of Society Council, improving communication between societies and The Union, as well as how they intend to stay unbiased towards a society. 

The President candidates aired their views on climate change, safety on campus, and working to understand and better cater for commuter students. The candidates were additionally questioned by the Vice-Chancellor on what the one thing they'd get him to change immediately at Manchester Met. 

This year boasts an impressive and diverse range of candidates for every role, including a number of slates, that will be competing for election.
