How to vote in the election

Tuesday 19-11-2019 - 12:15

There are three ways to vote:
+ In person
+ By post
+ By proxy (someone votes for you)

First, you’ve got to register.

To vote in person (most likely), register online
To vote by post, apply for a postal vote
To vote by proxy, apply using a paper form then send it to your local Electoral Registration Office (You can vote by proxy if you are away on polling day, have a medial issue or you can’t vote in person due to work or military service.)

Just before the election
In person:
You’ll get a poll card telling you when to vote and at which polling station. You can still vote if you lose this.

By post:
You’ll get a voting pack sent to you in the post. You have to send this back so it arrives at the electoral office before 10pm on voting day.

By proxy:
After you’ve applied, your local Electoral Registration Office will be in touch to talk you through the rest of the process.

On election day
In person:
Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm, you don’t need to bring any ID in England Wales or Scotland and you don’t have to take your poll card with you — there will be a big list of people and you just tell them your name.

There will be some polling booths in the room — normally just tables with dividers so nobody can see what you’re doing. Follow the instructions on the paper (it’s usually just cross in the box of the person you want to vote for), fold it up, and put it in the box. Done.

Most polling stations will have facilities like low-level booths or special equipment if you’re disabled.

By post:
If you applied for a postal vote, you’ll get a voting pack sent to you.

Mark your vote on the ballot paper, fill in the postal voting statement, put the ballot and statement in the envelope, seal it, then post it back as quickly as possible.

You have to make sure that your vote arrives at the Electoral Office by 10pm on voting day.

If you’re too late, you can take your voting pack to the local polling station by 10pm.
