First, to all our new students, I want to say a massive welcome to Man Met and to the city of Manchester.

Manchester is a wonderful, vibrant and diverse city and there is always something going on. So here are some tips from me to you about how to make the most of your freshers:

- Don’t be afraid to get out there and be yourself. Lots of people are in the same boat as you, having just moved to a massive city where they don’t know anyone.

- Come along to as many Union events as you can and join clubs and societies. You will meet loads of people with similar interests, and trust me when I say you will meet friends you’ll know for the rest of your life.

- Explore the city; there is so much going on, from free art and science museums to the café life of the Northern Quarter, lots of shopping and so many great places to eat, including Chinatown and the Curry Mile in Rusholme.

- A great way to explore the city is cycling around. You can either use Mobike, a pay as you go bike scheme, or you can bring your own. There are loads of bike racks around the city for you to chain your bike up.

- There is a fantastic nightlife in Manchester, with bars, clubs and gigs of any size you can imagine. So get out there, have fun, and use a registered taxi company to get home – I’d recommend Uber (# not sponse) as you can use the app and pay by card – or walk home with a group of friends, if you want some fresh air.

- And for those wild nights out where you may lose or smash your phone (don’t be that person who says ‘it won’t happen to me’) make sure it’s insured, it’ll be a lot cheaper for you in the long run.

After your amazing week, I hate to inform you, but you will get sick. Freshers’ Flu is real and horrible, so sign up to your local GP (the closest one to uni is the Arch Medical Practice).

For those of you who made it to the end of this, congratulations. Have a fantastic first week and rest of the year.
