Money, money, money
If you’re a parent studying at university, it’s really important to make sure you’re getting the right benefits and funding. By visiting the Advice Centre at The Union, the Advisors will be able to calculate exactly how much your student funding will/should be. They’ll also be able to let you know of any other benefits you’re entitled to, depending on your financial position.
If you’re expecting a baby
If you or your partner are already pregnant, or if you fall pregnant whilst studying at university, it’s handy to check what benefits and funding you’ll be entitled to once the baby arrives. This will give you more time to fill in any forms etc. whilst you’ve got a little bit more spare time! Come and see one of the friendly advisors at the Advice Centre who will be able to point you in the right direction.
Childcare
Top tip — give yourself plenty of time to secure a nursery place for your child before you go back to uni. Remember to also allow time for ‘settling in’ days, where you might drop your child off for a few hours at a time, rather than full days from the start. Try Manchester City Council’s website if you’re looking for nursery places.
Exceptional Factors
If you’re finding it hard to keep on track at uni, your first port of call should be your tutor. Let them know what your situation is and see how they can help. In emergency cases, such as missing an exam due to your child being poorly, then you may be entitled to exceptional factors support.
Wellbeing
Having a baby is such an exciting time but if you find you need some extra wellbeing support, the University’s Counselling and Wellbeing team are there to help.
Thinking of bringing your little one into uni?
Do it! If you’re grabbing a bite to eat in The Union, make sure you pick up one of the colouring packs (students can colour too, we won’t judge). There’s also baby changing facilities on the ground and first floor of our building if you need them. Finally, come and see us at the Family Fun Day on Saturday 29 February at Birley. We’ll have some great games and more helpful info that might make your life a bit easier.
You can find more information about having children whilst studying at university in our booklet here and remember you can always pop into our Advice Centre in The Union.
