It only takes five minutes to think up an excuse so you cancel all plans, stay at home, and catch-up on RuPaul's Drag Race UK — so does registering to vote.

On 6 September 2019, The Times newspaper suggested that No.10 are pushing for the date of the next general election to be as early as possible, so there’s less time for students to register to vote. Here’s what you need to know about voting as a student.

Register at your home and term time addresses

As a student, you can register to vote at both your term-time address and your home address. You can use either of these addresses to vote, as long as it’s not for the same election. Register to vote now.

Voting by post

Anyone can apply to vote via post, by filling in an application form. Students can have their postal vote sent to their term-time address — or vice versa — by writing that you “have both a home and term-time address” in section three of the form. It’s simple to find out how and where to send your postal vote.

Voting by proxy

If you’re not able to make it to the polling station, you can nominate someone to vote on your behalf. This person must be over 18 years old and registered to vote in that election or referendum. Find out more about proxy voting and download the application form.

If you’re looking for more information on voting, take a look at the Electoral Commission website.
