This past year has been a busy one for societies. They’ve hosted loads of events, focussing on giving you guys the best possible uni experience.

We want to shine a spotlight on those societies that have really gone the extra mile to make their society as fun and engaging as possible.

If you’re on the fence about joining a society, hopefully hearing all the cool things societies have done in this article will help you decide.

Society Spotlights

Esports MMU Society

Esports MMU hosted an intense CS:GO Wingman invitational tournament in collaboration with University of Manchester and Salford University Esports societies.

The event was sponsored by SIS and SIS Competitive Gaming and had 50 teams from UK Universities competing for a spot in the final at Pixel Bar in Manchester.

The sold-out event brought in loads of students from Manchester, Newcastle, Keele and Liverpool Universities, creating an electric atmosphere of people who all love gaming.

Onstage Musical Theatre Society

Onstage Musical Theatre Society put in the hours to produce and perform their first ever licensed musical: Carrie.

When we say Onstage put in the hours, we really mean it - with rehearsals twice per week since October and an intensive tech week planning lighting, sound, and special effects, they went above and beyond for all of you.

The show had everything from fake blood to telekinesis, making it an absolutely thrilling experience.

K-Pop Society

K-Pop society have put on some fab performances at Culture Fest events throughout the year, and also provided great entertainment with their performance at February’s Feel Good Friday Event.

The performers went from solo practice at home to group rehearsals in the studio, and all 24 dancers put on a fabulous performance in head-to-toe pink outfits and make up by the Make Up Artistry society.

The crowd absolutely loved the performance, too.

Anime Society

Anime Soc have put on loads of creative sessions that allowed their members to embrace their love of all things anime.

First up, it wouldn’t be Anime Soc without some cosplay - members created a character cosplay outfit out of recycled materials, resulting in the name: Trash Cosplay.

After two hours of sticking, cutting, drawing, and assembling, they strutted their stuff down the catwalk in their costume, with the winners getting a prize of manga or merch.

Members got creative again by producing their own Anime Opening. Filming, editing, props and acting were all done by Anime Soc members, making it a fun and new experience for everyone to get stuck into.

After the openings were complete, a screening of all the openings were shown and judged by the committee to decide who the winning team was.

MMU Philosophy Society

MMU Philosophy society held their annual conference with the support of the History, Politics and Philosophy department, organised by their chair Hamnah Khan.

The conference hosted 10 speakers over the course of two days, with keynote speakers Professor Adrian Moore, and Professor Yujin Nagasawa.

8 student speakers from across the UK and Europe also spoke at the event, making for a diverse range of thoughts and discussion.

What else have societies been up to?

Fundraisers

Societies have been very active this past year, with fundraising being a popular activity. Islamic Society have put together countless bake sales for a variety of charities and even hosted a charity week full of games and activities held in the business school.

Arab society have also participated in a hike through Castleton, raising money for Palestine.

Collabs

Some societies have been teaming up with each other, and even other Universities, to make their society fun and engaging for their members.

Make Up Artistry and Creative Writing collaborated on a spooky make-up and ghost story session for Halloween.

North African society teamed up with a University of Manchester society to put on a fabulous fashion show, using traditional clothing that celebrates North African culture.

The British Asian society collaborated with UoM’s British Asian Society to put on a sparkling winter ball.

And finally, Pakistan Society got together with the UoM British Asian society to play a muddy game of football.

What else?

Hobbies and Crafts Society have hosted loads of popular events, from lunar new year felt bunny making to Valentine love letter calligraphy.

Celebration of culture is a big part of many societies, from the Hindu Society Diwali ball, Filipino society’s Tagalog game, to Dearts collective Black Canvas project for Black History month, there’s no shortage of culture at The Union.

We absolutely love our societies at The Union, and they’re at the heart of everything we stand for.

If you’ve made it to the end of this article and still aren’t a member of a club or society – take this as your sign to get involved.

There’s hundreds of amazing opportunities that you can get involved in - why would you want to miss that?
