Spotlight on...Engineering Society

The Engineering Society have recently returned from what is becoming an annual trip to CERN.  Chair Szymon Zalewski, (first year Mechanical Engineering) told us all about it and what else the society have got planned for next year.

Tell us a little bit about the society

“It’s an academic society, so we usually aim towards the academic side of things. Every year we have the ‘Why Engineer?’ lecture series, so we put on lectures for students with people from the industry who come in and speak about their career and how it influences their life, so people have a better idea of what is out there. We also have the CERN trip every year, that's a bit of a tradition we do. We also have socials, so we go for a drink, or go to a museum – it’s usually a monthly kind of thing, and we’re planning more for next year. We are also trying to propagate all sorts of career paths on our Facebook and via email.”

How was the trip to CERN this year?

We travelled first to Geneva in Switzerland, and the first day was mainly splitting into groups and doing a bit of sight-seeing. On the second day we travelled to CERN itself via tram, and spent a good few hours there. I enjoyed it, it was my first time going. We got to see the engineering and physics side of things, looking at the particle planetarium. Later on there was a lecture regarding the history of CERN and what they have discovered so far. On the third day we did a bit more sight-seeing, and visited Mont Salève where you can see all of Geneva, and we visited a Natural History Museum too. I enjoyed it myself, and I think others did too.”

What other events have the society got planned?

“So next year we want to do a lot more scientific sight-seeing around Manchester, and organise more trips for the society. We want to work with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET)  to create more meetings and career development opportunities. We also want to introduce study groups so we can collaborate with each other and share knowledge on a particular subject, and also do a few more quizzes together – I really enjoy that. We want to propagate the society further and get more and more members involved.”

What would you say to anyone who is interested in joining the Engineering Society?

“It’s overall a really good opportunity to network, and a very good opportunity to learn more about the industry you’ll be going into. When you come to study engineering itself, you have a very small idea about what the industry is like, however you can broaden that spectrum with things like ‘”Why Engineer?” and collaborating with other engineers, so you’ll really learn what you want to do. Also, for example, the trip to CERN is a great educational opportunity and working with the IET and attending events will help with your charter ship later on in your career.”
