This week marks the launch of Women in Leadership, a new campaign aiming to inspire and empower female students at Manchester Met. We caught up with Charlotte Bowers, third year Film and Media student, to find out more.

What is Women in Leadership?

Women in Leadership is a new campaign, which aims to inform, motivate and inspire female students to build a supportive community. By coming together for discussions and arranging talks from inspirational women, it will address the barriers and issues faced by women in the workplace. We aim to bring our female students together in collaboration by creating a community; because when women support each other, incredible things happen.

Where did the idea come from?

As a third year student, I have some anxieties about the world of work, and talking to friends, they felt the same. I also feel there is a lot of unnecessary competition between women. I wanted to address this situation and create a space where women come together.

How can people get involved?

Women in Leadership is here for self identified women and people with other identities that encompass women. The first event will be taking place at The Union, on Friday 25 November from 16:00-18:00 in Conference Room 1. If you would like to learn more about your options after university, explore the barriers sexism raises in relation to work, or simply meet other women students thinking about life after university, then come along. You can find out more about the event on Facebook.

Do you have any other events planned?

The events will be ongoing, yet the next date is TBA.

What advice would you give to another student wanting to start a campaign?

It has been surprisingly easy, but only with the great help from The Union. People are always available to help, and by discussing your idea, it becomes much easier to work with.

Want to run a campaign and make positive change at Manchester Met? Tell us about your idea.
