Category: Education/Academic
As a student whos worked at an open day now on a few occasions I realise hw closely connected each department becomes and believe this needs to be of more common and interactive spirit. It's as if were all one family being called, theres the Business students, health, humanities, arts, fashion, languages, social sciences, science and engineering and then there we go thats about it. As a geography student I was working alongside an engineering student and a maths student and at he end of the day we all found ourselves stood around the computing stand learning about a different discipline and we all really enjoyed it. Why isnt this more common? Students will always have their queries of othr subjects, simply just not enough to engage with the subject academically, or, other reas have taken priority.
This is a win win situation, It may be that a fashion studies student wants to understand the Pyschological sciences behind their work, why is it younger people like more colourful clothing? Theyve always wanted to now this but the artistic focus's havent quite enabled for this, so they can go to the psychology questions and answers and ask a student with the scientific knowledge behind their query and visa versa at other events. It may be that students arent to sure of the questions being asked, the best research qustions going unansewered in Science, could be in the minds of a business student or art student for proposal and next year we could have 100s of new research projects.
How the event would work, taking place in the union:
May 2: Art and Fashion school subjects
May 9: Health/ medical and Social Science school subjects
May 16: Business and Law school subjects
May 23: Science and Engineering school subjects
May 30: Education and Humanities subjects
Dont forget this is a win win, its the external students opportunity to ask all the questions they want to that dont really mix in with their own academics directly, but may need explaining for a sideline issue, or they may just have strong interests in this one off matter. At the end of the day we could have 100s of queries floating round which have been shouted out, ready for the next year of academic research. As well as this, internal students of each event are able to shine, prove themselves, gain a confidence, and become one step closer to their chosen careers, particularly in areas like teaching.
