February is LGBT+ History month, a time to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* people throughout history and in the present day. It's also a time to learn and tackle prejudice; the struggle for LGBT+ rights and recognition continues today and around the world.

All over Manchester there are opportunities to explore LGBT+ History; on Monday 13th March, we will be organising a staff and student guided tour of ‘Never Going Underground: The Fight for LGBT+ Rights’ at The People’s History Museum.  'Never Going Underground' was the name of the campaign against Section 28, an infamous piece of legislation that forbade the ‘promotion of homosexuality’.  The protest against this saw the UK’s largest ever gathering for LGBT rights in Manchester in 1988.

This is a great chance to find out more about LGBT+ histories in Manchester and have a fun day out too, with tea and scones in the Museum afterwards courtesy of the University.  There are a limited number of places for students, so if you are interested in attending, please check the events page for more information.

Your full time Officers will also be holding an LGBT+ focused Society Sunday and World Cinema Night, as well as launching our Tied Together campaign on the 15th February.  Sports teams will be wearing rainbow laces for their games, and signing the Sports Charter, which pledges to make the value of fairness and equality, respect and dignity a reality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.  Watch out for photos and updates on our Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #TiedTogether.

Why not explore LGBT+ books and films this February?

The library have made it quick and easy to find something you’ll love.  There is a Love and Sexuality themed reading as part of the Love To Read strand, including a display on the second floor of All Saints Library.  There’s also a curated playlist of films and documentaries, most of which are available to stream for free.  If you want to dig deeper through LGBT+ literature and film, there’s a guide to LGBTQ resources available too.

Your LGBT+ Society and others are holding a number of events and activities over the month as listed below:
