GMSP's open letter to Andy Burnham

We’re so lucky at Man Met to have such a diverse student body. Whether you’ve come from another country, another part of the UK or just down the road, we all now call Manchester our home! And as part of the Greater Manchester Student Partnership (GMSP) we’re working with four other Students’ Unions to make Manchester even better.

Just last week, 9 student officers – including your President Komal and your Wellbeing Officer George - signed an open letter to Greater Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham. In this letter, we highlighted the unfair payment structure for tram fairs.

Commuting students can end up paying £100’s just to get to campus. With the cost-of-living soaring, this is deeply unfair. Students who have to take the tram can end up paying three times more on transport than those that take the bus.

In our open letter, we’ve lobbied Andy Burnham to introduce a student fare for trams, similar to what we see in cities like London. Creating a fairer pricing model for students who have no other travel options.

Your Officers will be meeting with Andy Burnham this November to discuss the discount.
