It's that time again. Here's everything you need to know about the 2026 Student Officer Elections.
Before everyone disappears for a well-earned break, we wanted to sign off with a little update from your Student Officer team. While you’ve been studying, socialising, commuting, stressing, thriving, and everything in between, your officers have been busy travelling up and down the country, lobbying for change, meeting students, and doing their best to make uni life that bit better. We asked them to share their top ten moments of the year. Wow, it’s been a busy one.
Welcome Week feels like a lifetime ago now, but it was such a highlight. The officers spent the week hosting induction talks with new and returning students, providing a chance to introduce the Students’ Union, explain exactly what we do, and reassure everyone that yes, you will find your people here.
Forum, Komal and George headed down to London for the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Students. While they were there, they bumped into Diane Abbott, which obviously required a photo. More importantly, they pushed the government on a huge issue: the Household Income threshold for the maximum maintenance loan has been stuck at £25,000 since 2007. That’s older than some freshers… Time for change.

Movember was massive this year. George even ran a 10k with Miles (President) and Josh (Activities Officer) from Liverpool John Moores SU. The route started at the yellow wall, headed to Salford Quays, and then back again. Picture three sweaty men with powerful moustaches sprinting for men’s mental health. And the best part? As a uni we raised over £10,000, smashing last year’s total and doubling our £5k target. Huge.
October saw campus glowing pink. Sports clubs trained in pink, officers joined in, and so many student groups got creative with collaborations and awareness posts. It was loud, it was bright, and it was all for an incredibly important cause.
One of the Imies biggest missions this year has been making sport more inclusive - no pressure, no costs, no sign-ups, no “I haven’t been to the gym since 2019” shame. Officers dropped into Free Sport & Fitness sessions to show that anyone can get involved (even if it means looking a bit silly on camera). It’s all about moving, meeting people, and getting a break from deadlines.
Freshers Fair is always chaos in the best possible way - music, stalls, freebies, committees handing out flyers like they’re on a mission. Officers loved chatting to so many students and hearing what you want from the year ahead.

George and Imie appeared on ITV National News with Amira, the NUS President, discussing how the student nightlife culture is shifting. Not everyone wants a big night out anymore - more and more students are opting for games nights, bingo, sip-and-paints, and chilled events. (Long live cosy evenings.)
This year the team made it a priority to be more visible and accessible. They’ve run four drop-in sessions so far, chatting with students about commuting, transport, semester highs and lows, and anything else people want to share. These sessions help shape what the SU focuses on, and your feedback genuinely matters.
Welcome Week included a seriously good gig from Kofi Stone, and one student even said during a drop-in that it was the highlight of their whole semester. We love to see it.
The team has plenty more planned for next semester, but for now, they’re buzzing to have shared these moments with you. Whether you came to an event, messaged them, attended a drop-in, or simply engaged with their work behind the scenes - thank you!
Enjoy the break, rest up, and we’ll see you in the new year. 🎄✨
