According to the First World War Centenary Project, “we are all connected to the First World War, either through our own family history, the heritage of our local communities or because of its long-term impact on society and the world we live in today.”

This Sunday 11 November marks 100 years since the end of the First World War.

How Manchester will mark the occasion

06:00: a lone piper will play the traditional Scottish lament, Battle O'er, outside Manchester Cathedral to herald the start of commemorations. Around 1,000 other pipers will join in across the UK and around the world.

11:00: a two-minute silence will start and end with the firing of a 105mm gun from the Town Hall.

12:30: bells will ring out in unison from Manchester Cathedral, St Ann's Church, the Hidden Gem Church and other locations. This is designed to replicate the national outpouring of relief as news of the ceasefire filtered through.

18:55: a lone bugler will sound the Last Post outside Manchester Cathedral. There will be more than 1,000 other buglers also sounding the tribute across the world at the same time.

19:00: a beacon will be lit outside Manchester Cathedral as part of the nationwide 'Beacons of Light' movement to symbolise an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of peace.

Manchester Metropolitan have published some interesting articles on the First World War exploring the politics of remembrance, the treatment of shell shock in Manchester and what became of war animals as part of the #Armistice100 series.

Take a trip to the Imperial War Museum North at Salford Quays and explore the history of conflict. They currently have an exhibition on remembrance, and you can see the wave of poppies outside the entrance (on show until 25 November).

Manchester Central Library has some items and documents from the First World War on display too – plus it's an excellent study spot if you need somewhere for quiet reflection.
