Last month, I wrote about how none of us have it together all the time, and how reaching out whenever you’re struggling can make such a difference.
This month is Movember, so I thought for this article I’d shine a spotlight on men’s mental health, a topic that’s very personal to me
It’s no secret that men often find it harder to open up about how they’re actually feeling. Society tells us things like “man up” or “just get on with it”. But this rhetoric can be so damaging to young men.
This month is all about changing this: breaking down barriers, reducing the stigma and showing young men that it’s ok to talk.
Across campus this month, you might spot many students growing moustaches or taking part in their own society or sports club Movember events.
But Movember is more than just growing a tache, its about creating conversations about Men’s Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and Prostate and Testicular Cancer.
In the UK, suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50. That’s why as part of Movember, those who are taking part are running 60km during the month to raise awareness.
This month is all about challenging harmful stereotypes and expectations for men. No one should have to keep everything bottled up.
But you don’t have to run to get involved, you can simply help by checking in with your mates and make sure to really listen when they answer. Show them they’re not alone.
