Need extra support over the assessment period? Don't worry, we've got you covered.
As we wrap up another academic year, I’ve been reflecting on everything we’ve achieved together and what an incredible journey it’s been!
Serving as your Societies & Development Officer has been both a privilege and a joy, and I wanted to take this chance to share some of the highlights from my time in the role.
We started the year strong with the legendary Freshers Fair. It was amazing to see new and returning students filling the space, connecting with societies, and bringing such positive energy to campus life.
To keep that momentum going, we rolled out committee training sessions early in the year. These sessions were all about empowering committee members with the tools and knowledge they need to run inclusive, engaging, and sustainable societies. The growth I’ve seen since then has been inspiring.
One of the most exciting projects I launched this year alongside Leila, your president, was the Big Union Social. What started as a simple idea quickly became a staple of our student calendar. With back-to-back high turnouts each month, these socials brought students together in a fun, relaxed environment to unwind, make friends, and celebrate each other.
One personal highlight was organising an Afrobeats & Amapiano club night, which welcomed over 150+ students. It was more than just a night out, it was a vibrant celebration of culture, rhythm, and unity. I’m proud to have created a space where students could connect through music and movement in such an electric atmosphere.
This year, I’ve been committed to growing and supporting our student groups. I’m proud to have approved over 20 new society applications, helping bring students' passions and ideas to life. Whether it's a niche interest or a major movement, these societies are the heart of our community and watching them grow has been so rewarding.
I also recently wrapped up our final grant panel for the year, ensuring our societies have the funding they need to run events, campaigns, and socials. And to make things even better, I’ve worked on a new structure for volunteering hours and aligning it with RISE points, making sure students get recognition for the time and effort they put in.
Keeping communication open has been a priority this year, and I’m happy to say we’ve held several successful town halls to hear from you directly. Your feedback has shaped our decisions and helped us grow together as a Union.
On a more social note, we introduced committee socials, giving society leaders a space to relax, connect, and share ideas. I’m excited to continue and expand these in the next academic year.
This year has been full of milestones, celebrations, and meaningful change. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and even more excited about what the upcoming year has in store.
Thank you for your support, your energy, and your ideas. Let’s keep building a Union that reflects who we are, diverse, passionate, and full of potential.
And before the academic year fully winds down, here’s one last exciting opportunity! On Saturday 14 June, Joeboy is bringing the Viva Lavida Experience to Manchester Academy 2, and we’ve secured a limited number of £10 tickets exclusively for students. From “Body & Soul” to “Sip (Alcohol)” and tracks from his new album, it’s set to be an unforgettable night. Don’t miss out.
Here’s to another amazing year ahead!
