The many types of students at MMU

At MMU, you’ll find all kinds of students. We have such a diverse student body with people of all ages, nationalities, religions, sexualities, interests...the list goes on. We’re really proud of this here at MMU and we aim for everyone to feel represented by their students’ union no matter what kind of student you are!

With that in mind, here’s a non-exhaustive summary of the types of students you might find here! See if you can spot your friends, your flat mates, or even yourself...

The art student: The art student is often easily identified and we have so many of them here at MMU thanks to Manchester School of Art, the second oldest art school in the whole of the UK! Art students work hard to perfect their practice which you can usually see as they’re likely to have paint splatters on their clothes, random artist tools poking out their bag, or a huge film camera dangling from their neck. Often, you can see them carrying a tote bag around campus (bonus points if it’s one of the Manchester School of Art bags) and wearing overalls ready to get painting. Chances are, they’ll have a fringe that doesn’t quite reach their eyebrows or their mate has one, and they definitely own a pair of docs.

The sporty student: The sporty student will likely be dressed in MMU colours (blue and orange) wearing some variety of their sports kit or hoody. The sporty student works hard at their degree, works hard during training and still has energy to go out on a Wednesday night. Likelihood is that you’ll spot them carrying a huge water bottle to their lectures on Thursday morning in an attempt to nurse their hangover.

The fashion student: The fashion student is always the best dressed. They’ll know what’s on trend before it’s even on trend. If they’re in their third year, they’ll be stressing about the MMU’s Fashion Show, however they always pull it off and it’s well worth attending in the summer term.

The computing student: At MMU, we have a range of Computing degrees within the Mathematics and Computing department so there’s lots of students studying Computing courses here at MMU. Computing students will probably be on their way to one of JD’s various computer labs or the gaming suite where they have colour-changing lights. They might be involved in MMU’s Computing or Games Development Societies, but they definitely have a discord account and possibly a set-up at home with two monitors and LED lights.

The student who leaves everything to the last minute: This student can always be seen running to the Library roughly 24 hours before their assessment is due and spending the rest of their waking hours making sure that they actually get their deadline handed in on time. They’ll be armed with copious amounts of caffeine and snacks to keep them going and looking quite stressed. But the chances are, they’ll be doing the exact same thing next time as either this method really works for them, or they just keep forgetting.

The commuter student: If the commuter student has come into uni for the day, they’re there for the long haul. They’ve probably driven a long way, got the train, tram or a bus to get to their lectures with their laptop, coffee cup and anything else they need for the day in their bag. If there’s a large gap between lectures, they’ll likely be sat in the Library getting a few hours of studying in and nothing winds them up more than seminars being suddenly cancelled or new ones being added into the timetable at late notice as this will mess up their train tickets.

The student who’s always studying: They've come to uni and they have their goals in mind. This type of student knows what they want and they know how to get it: by getting their head down to get that First. This student will often be seen heading to the Library, working away in the Benzie building, or even heading to one of the computer labs in JD whilst other students look on, jealous of their motivation whilst they’re leaving the Library after 30 minutes of work to get that meal deal from Tesco they suddenly need.

The student who goes out every night: Whether they tend to go out to 42s, Hotmess, Factory, Gay Village or Hidden, these students just want to have a good time whilst they’re at university. Some of them may have joined a sport or society and go out with them every Wednesday, or they head out with the mates they’ve made living in student accommodation (from my experience, a lot of this type of student live in Cambridge Halls). They’ll be keen to make up for lost time during the pandemic and ready to spend their student loan. Ironically though, these types of students will often still buckle down at assessment time and I’ve seen them get some of the best grades.

Whatever type of student you are, we want you to have the best experience possible here at MMU and the Students’ Union is here to support you in doing so. If you’re not sure what kind of student you are yet, why not try out some of our sports clubs, volunteering opportunities and societies and find out what you like best.
