Vote in the Student Officer Elections

Thursday 29-02-2024 - 11:07

It’s that time of year again – candidates are out campaigning, posters are popping up and banners line campus. This can only mean one thing: voting is about to open for Student Officer Elections. Voting is open from 4 - 8 March, but how do you place that all important vote you might ask? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

We’ve put together a simple guide to lead you through the voting process. But first; why should you vote?

Each year our Student Officers are democratically elected by you, the students of Manchester Met, to represent the voices of every student. We need as many students to vote as possible to ensure every concern, experience and opinion is heard and represented by the students in the Officer positions.

Now onto the important bit; how to vote.

Check out this quick video guide which shows you exactly what you'll see each step of the way.

FAQs

Q: Help, I can't get onto the voting page!

A: First, make sure you’ve made a Union Cloud account. If you haven’t, then head to The Union’s website and click on the button that says ‘Sign In’ in the top right corner. Click on the big yellow button that says ‘Students Click Here’ and create your account using your student email, which will look like studentIDnumber@stu.mmu.ac.uk.

Q: How do I choose who to vote for?

A: Whilst we can't tell you who to vote for, we can give you some pointers on how to decide. Each candidate will have submitted a manifesto. This is a fancy word for "why you should vote for me". Reading through each candidate's manifesto will give you an idea of what they would do if elected and a bit about what they're like as a person. From this, you can choose who you think will do the best job.

Q: Why do I need to vote for more than one candidate?

A: To make the election as fair and democratic as possible, we use alternative transferable voting. This is another way of saying ‘voting in order of preference’. For example, if your first-choice candidate for a role is eliminated from the running, then your second choice will be taken into consideration when tallying the votes.

Q: What is RON?

A: If you get to the voting page and don’t want to elect any of the candidates, then don’t worry. For each position you have the option to vote for ‘Re-open Nominations’, also known as RON. If RON gets the most votes for a position, the candidate nominations will reopen and new candidates can put themselves in the running. Voting will then open again once the second round of nominations have closed.
