Monday 11-09-2023 - 17:09

Starting this new chapter is super exciting, but we know it can be pretty nerve-wracking too - from the moving stress and settling into your new city, to meeting your flatmates or learning your new commute. There’s so much to think about, that’s why we’ve put together a list of 6 simple steps to get you started and help put your mind at ease.

👋 Visit The Union

Every Manchester Met student is automatically a member of The Union – we exist to support you throughout your time at uni and we can’t wait to meet you all.

Come and lunch at The Salutation pub, buy some uni essentials at the shop, attend an event in our main hall like our vintage sale, or grab a Starbucks coffee at the café.

You could also pop-in to our expert Advice Centre who are on hand to help you through any issues you may face whilst studying at Manchester Met - including finance, housing, academic issues and loads more.

Across all floors of The Union, we’ve got studio spaces, places to hang out, meeting rooms and even a media suite, which you can book out.

🎪 Go to Freshers Fair

Trust us, you won’t want to miss the iconic Freshers Fair in your first week at uni. Running on 26 September & 27 September from 10:30 -16:00 at Sugden Sports Centre, turn up whenever suits you and make your way around the fair - and make sure to collect as many freebies as you can get your hands on!

This is the best opportunity to chat with our incredible MMU sports teams, and learn about the amazing clubs & societies The Union has to offer, from the members themselves.

Oh, and of course snap some memories in the photobooth, enjoy a delicious slice from Dominos, and snatch up some amazing student discounts 📸🍕

🏫 Get to know campus

Campus is going to be your second home for the next few years, so make sure you know everything it has to offer. From The Union, to the Business School’s food court and All Saints Park, there’s so much for you to explore and enjoy on campus.

Don’t forget you also need to pick up your student ID card, which is a great opportunity for you to get to know campus. They can be collected from The Business School or Brooks Building throughout September and early October.

💰 Set up a student discount

Probably the first thing on most people's agenda is to set up a student discount, why wait when you could start saving now with tons of discounts? From Apple products, gym memberships, clothing brands and supermarket offers, you could be saving loads just for being a student.

Simply sign up with your uni email and browse the thousands of discounts you have to choose from. Some of the best places to start are UNiDAYS and Student Beans.

🩺 The important stuff

Join a GP: For those of you moving into the city, this is one that might slip your mind but is super important. Search your local area and get yourself signed up so that you have the proper access to the healthcare services you need.

Make a budget: For a lot of you, starting uni brings an era of independence that you may not have experienced before. One top tip for every student is to not only make a budget, but follow it! If you need any support on this, our expert Advice Centre is here to help.

Buy a bus pass & learn your journey: You can visit The Union’s finance office to get yourself a bus pass, ranging from weekly to yearly travel. Whether you’re commuting or moving to Manchester, learn your journey to campus and give yourself one less thing to worry about in a morning.

🌆 Explore the city

Manchester could be a brand new environment for you, or you may have lived here all your life, but either way it’s a city that keeps on giving. There’s always new and exciting places to visit, so get out there and embrace everything it has to offer.

There’s historic museums, trendy vintage shops, delicious food at every corner, and exciting new activities like Manchester’s new real-life Mario Kart
