Volunteering in Homelessness

Homelessness is a big issue in Manchester which is pretty hard to ignore. We know lots of students care about this problem and want to do something pro-active to help. The problem is complex, we want to ensure students are making infrmed, sustainable decisions when it comes to volunteering in homelessness.

There are loads of fantastic and dedicated charities working tirelessly in Greater Manchester to tackles the root causes of homelessness and provide practical support to rough sleepers and people at risk of homeslessness.

This jampacked session will help you figure how to use your skills to have greatest impact. These charities are experts in their feilds but they rely on volunteers for a range or wierd and wonderful roles. It may be that you can help in ways you never imagined.

Book a free ticket to confirm your place.

Our guest speakers come from organisations involved in The Big Change. As well as inspiring and empowering you to volunteer they will be able to provide vital insight and context around the problem.

Shelter

Shelter helps more than one million people a year with advice and support via our website, help lines, and national network of face-to-face services. We help people to find and keep a home in a place where they can thrive, and we tackle the root causes of bad housing by campaigning for new laws, policies and practice. We support thousands of clients a year and are committed to delivering more of what we do to the people who need us most. We’re here so no-one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own

Greater Together Manchester Night Shelter

GTM Night Shelter runs shelters for people who would otherwise be sleeping rough. With strong connections with day centres and housing support, we aim to provide a warm, safe and hospitable environement for those with nowhere to sleep at night. Our ethos is to make sure that our guests are treated with respect and dignity throughout. Daily lives can be difficult balancing housing appointment and employment needs, our shelters provide a relaxed environment and prepare our guests for the next day. Volunteers are vital to the smooth running of the shelters and can be involved in any number of activities.

Barnabus

Barnabus is a Christian Homeless Charity in Manchester with a drop-in centre, support workers, NHS health workers in conjunction with The Urban Village Medical Practice, Our ReNu Furniture Upcycling Project and an allotment project. We offer a lifeline to homeless and vulnerable people, providing hope and opportunities for transformation. We offer a strong network of support and work closely with other specialist agencies to cover all aspects of need. We don't believe anyone should be without a home. Our aim is to release people from poverty, fear and oppression, empowering people to improve and rebuild their lives in a sustainable way. When you support Barnabus and share about our work you're providing hope and provision to homeless and vulnerable people.
