Finances

As an independent registered Charity, The Union’s finances are independently audited each year by an external firm – Knox Cropper.

The full versions of our audited accounts and Trustee Report are available to view online. You’ll notice that for accounting purposes, The Union’s accounts are split so that you can see the trading and commercial activity of The Union separately.

These documents are also available via the Charity Commission and Companies House.

Affiliations

In the most recent accounting year, The Union chose to affiliate to the National Union of Students for a fee of £37,500.

Union membership

As a registered student here at Manchester Met, the good news is that you are automatically granted membership of The Union.

Your membership gives you access to all our services and activities.

If you would rather not be a member of The Union, you can ‘opt-out’ of your membership by emailing the University Registrar or the CEO of The Union, Rhiannon Roberts.

Trustee Board

Alongside the elected officers of The Union, a group of volunteers called co-opted trustees offer their time, passion and skills to look after the union. As a combined group they look after the finances, staffing, legal compliance and strategy of the Union, delegating tasks through the staff team.

I’m Evelyn, I’m Chair of The Union Board of Trustees, was appointed earlier this year. I have been involved in health and social care in the voluntary and community sector, housing and the NHS for over 30 years most recently as Chair of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust which I did for 8 years. I have a long relationship with MMU, I am an alumni being part of the first cohort of the MA in Women's Studies and obtaining my Masters from the University. I received an Honorary Doctorate by MMU and also served on the Governing Body for 5 years.

Being appointed Chair of The Union Board of Trustees is a real honour for me. Without MMU I would not have had the opportunities to have the roles I hold and do the things I have done, it feels like 'coming home' for which I am very thankful.

I’ve worked as an academic for the past thirty years in two universities committed to widening participation – the Open University and the University of Huddersfield where I am currently Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning. My discipline background is Politics, and I publish widely in the areas of governance, democracy and devolution.

Becoming an independent trustee for MMU’s Student Union felt like a good fit with my values as it too is committed to widening participation and ensuring everyone has access to the transformative power of education.

I’m Geoff. I come with a lifetime of work experience in Banking and Human Resources across many sectors. Having had 2 children go through university, I have a passion for diversity and inclusion and feel that this is aligned to the values of MMU.

I have worked in SU’s for a number of years, in several roles, most recently Deputy CEO of University of Lincoln Students’ Union. As an Independent Trustee of MMU, I have always found The Union to be an inclusive and welcoming environment for members, with ambitious plans that I am looking forward to contributing to, to help support all members in their student journey and beyond.

I’m Sara and I work for a housing association, where we do our best to make people’s lives better through the provision of homes and support services. But my first proper job was as a student officer at LJMU and the bug for education and representation has never left me.

I am delighted to be working with the properly ace team at MMUSU as an independent Trustee and hope that I can help the Union to support all students in achieving their success.

Matt has been a trustee since 2022. He works at Autotrader and is responsible for helping the business identify, assess, and manage it’s key risks. Matt is passionate about giving people opportunities which aligns to MMU’s purpose of supporting students through their University career.
