Student staff

Student staff are at the heart of making The Union a welcoming, lively, and supportive place for everyone at Manchester Met. From roles such as Inclusion Ambassadors, who help lead campaigns and events that celebrate diversity and create positive change on campus, to Coffee Shop Assistants who keep our spaces friendly, efficient and student focused, there’s a wide mix of opportunities to get involved and contribute to campus life.

Student staff at The Union

We know many students want parttime work that not only helps them earn money but also builds valuable skills for future employment. Roles at The Union are designed to help you develop confidence, customer service experience, teamwork skills, and hands on knowledge that can support your long term career goals.

Just as importantly, we recognise the need to balance earning with your studies. Our roles are intentionally flexible, to ensure your work can fit around lectures, deadlines, and student life. This approach reflects a wider commitment across the University to support students in gaining paid experience without compromising academic success.

Whether you’re looking to make a difference, gain experience, or simply earn alongside your studies, working in a student staff role at The Union is a great way to grow, connect, and contribute to your university community.

Over the past few months working at the Union, I’ve really valued the opportunity to support communications for Boundary, the Union’s bar, and develop social content that feels both creative and engaging. It’s been rewarding to experiment with ideas and see them connect with audiences.

As an international student, this role has been especially meaningful. There’s a real flexibility in working as a student, with and for other students, which makes the environment feel inclusive and easy to navigate. It’s helped me feel more connected to the community while balancing work alongside my studies.

Working as an ambassador at the Students’ Union over the past three years has been one of the most rewarding parts of my university experience. The role has pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and significantly build my confidence, particularly through public speaking, contributing to panels, and engaging with diverse groups of students.

It has also given me the opportunity to take ideas from concept to reality, allowing me to plan and deliver events and projects that have had a real impact on the student community.

Beyond developing practical skills, the SU has played a key role in both my personal and professional growth. It has helped me better understand work–life balance, while also providing a creative and supportive outlet alongside my academic studies.

Being part of The Union has given me a deeper insight into how the university operates and the importance of student voice in shaping that experience. I’ve genuinely enjoyed working in an environment that values initiative, collaboration, and continuous development.
