On Monday 15 October, join the Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador's to find out more about making change whilst at university. Hassan has more details.

"To many students, the National Union of Students (NUS) is simply just a discount card and in many cases unheard of — however the NUS is so much more. The NUS has three core values at its heart of equality, democracy and collectivism to “promote, defend and extend the rights of students and develop and champion strong students’ unions.”

One of the key campaigns that links in with diversity and inclusion is the Black Students Campaign. The campaign “represents students of African, Asian, Arab and Caribbean descent at a local and national level on all issues affecting Black students.” Since its establishment in 1922, the NUS has been lobbying on student issues for decades and been part of many historic wins such as the implementation of the student railcard in 1974, providing affordable travel for millions of students. More recently, the NUS has had wins such as holding the Home Office to account in 2016, using expert legal advice from the NUS for wrongly deporting 48,000 international students through flawed testing.

We would love to welcome you to our Black Students campaign session on Monday 15 October between 17:00 - 19:00. We are delighted to announce the NUS Black Students’ officer, Ilyas Nagdee, will be delivering a session on the NUS and campaigning, with the opportunity to participate in a workshop on how to create change at university. It will be a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into the work of the NUS. The ultimate aim of this session is to encourage students to become more involved with the NUS and the Black Students campaign, with the hope to inspire many students to exercise their student voice.

With over 30,000 students on our campus, it is often easy to feel like you lose your own individuality and by engaging with your student voice, you will be heard. Your student voice will empower and give you a sense of belonging. Change is coming to the HE sector — the direction and speed at which it occurs is dependent on the students behind it."
