We caught up with Russ Townsend, Chair of MMU Men's Football about their recent collection for Manchester Central Food Bank:

"At MMU Men's Football we have four teams competing in BUCS. After just returning following the winter break, all four teams are still in contention to win their respective leagues, with the first team two points clear and undefeated in the league this year. Our second team sit second in the league and are into the quarter finals of the cup, whilst our thirds and fourths sit second in what appears will go 'down to the wire' season.

Each year we try to do our bit for the local community and charity. Last year myself and four others of our boys slept homeless for the night raising just over £500 for homeless people across Manchester. This year I chose to help Manchester Central Food Bank. The reason for doing so was following a period of refection over Christmas, looking at what I personally take for granted, and felt an enormous burden of guilt knowing not everyone has the privileges I do.

I chose to use my position as the Chairman to my advantage, getting our boys to bring non-perishable goods down to training. To their credit the boys were top draw, and more than willing to help. Luckily several other teams within the AU at MMU also helped out. So a massive thank you to Hockey, Rounders, Rugby League, Netball and Women’s Football.

Through my part-time work at TGI Fridays, I also managed to promote the project to them, and they were more than happy to help. A good friend of mine Daisy Hawkins, who does a lot of volunteering work alongside myself, wanted to help as well. She went to her place of work at Paperchase and engaged them with our project.

We have a very exciting end to the season, and will hopefully have one more charitable act by the end of the academic year, however this is yet to be decided.

We are really excited to see what what we can accomplish in the coming months both off and on the field as a team."
