Moving to Uni? Don't Forget These Essentials

Monday 17-08-2026 - 12:13

Whether you're counting down the days until move-in or planning on leaving packing until the last minute, we've got you covered.

Here's a list of the key essentials that will help you settle in, stay organised and avoid those "I should've brought that" moments.

πŸŽ“The Essentials

These are some of the items you'll probably end up using every day.

  • Mattress topper – Student accommodation mattresses aren't always known for comfort. A topper can make a huge difference to your sleep.
  • Extension lead – Plug sockets never seem to be where you need them.
  • Hangers – Easy to forget, but you'll definitely need them.
  • Flip flops, slippers or sliders – Especially important if you're sharing a bathroom, plus it's always good to have something easy to throw on.
  • Identifiable cutlery and crockery – Whether it's a colourful mug or a unique plate, it'll help avoid the classic "someone's borrowed my fork" situation.
  • Microwavable lunch boxes – Great for meal prepping and storing leftovers.
  • Scissors – You'll use them far more often than you expect.
  • Basic first aid kit – Include plasters, painkillers and any medication you regularly take.
  • Bottle opener – One of those things everyone forgets until they need it.
  • Doorstop – A great way to keep your door open during your first week and get to know your flatmates.
  • Umbrella – You're moving to Manchester... it's going to rain.

✨Nice to Have

These aren't essential, but they'll make your room feel more like home and could help you out later on.

  • Fairy lights – Add a cosy feel (if your accommodation allows them).
  • Photos of family and friends – An easy way to personalise your space.
  • Desk mirror – Especially useful if your room doesn't include one.
  • Fancy dress outfits or accessories – Freshers' events and societies usually have themed nights, and you'll probably use them more than once. Save yourself the time and money of buying them at uni or asking your family to post them later.
  • Earplugs – Ideal if you're a light sleeper or your flatmates are a little more social than you are.
  • Small toolkit – You never know when you might need to tighten a screw or put something together.

⭐Top Tip

We know it's tempting, but you don't need to bring your entire wardrobe.

The reality is you'll probably end up buying a few new clothes while you're at uni, and Manchester has plenty of great shopping spots. Your style might even change once you settle in! Stick to your staple pieces, seasonal essentials and your favourite outfit. You can always bring more home after your first visit if you need to.

Keep an eye out for vintage sales happening at The Union throughout the year, so you can bag some great second-hand finds without breaking the bank.

Finally...

Don't stress if you forget something.

There are plenty of supermarkets and shops across Manchester where you can pick up anything you've left behind. No one arrives with the perfect packing list, so focus on bringing the essentials, enjoy move-in day and get excited for everything university has to offer.
