This week saw the exciting launch of Project Cheshire

All students at Manchester Met can bid for funding from £50 - £2,000 to hold a range of activities and events at the Cheshire campus. We caught up with Tash to find out what she hopes to see from the project…

What is Project Cheshire?

“Project Cheshire is a fund which students can bid into.  It’s come from the University, and funds can be used for activities or events such as music, sports, theatre, cultural and charity events.  The fund is mainly for those who are not part of a sports team or a society, as those students have other funding sources that they can bid for, so it gives all students the chance to be involved with coming up with events on campus.”

What sort of events and ideas are you looking forward to seeing?

“I’m looking forward to seeing events that all students can take part in.  Some students have already approached me with the idea of a mini festival, with music, a bouncy castle, food, bringing BBQ’s down and getting everyone together.  I’m hoping this will appeal to all students, those who commute, post-graduates, and it’ll be whole day event thing, with an after party where we can move the music into a marquee on campus. It should be really exciting!”

What do you hope students get out of the experience?

“Students will get experience in event management, planning and organising the events themselves. If they have a go in their first year, and then build events in scale and they are successful then this could go on their CV and play a part in their potential career prospects.  I think it will also build links between The Union and the University too, which is great.  Hopefully it’ll also bring students together to work collaboratively.  Students and the student experience are still the primary focus in Cheshire going forward, so I think this will be a really positive opportunity!”

What advice would you give to students looking to place a bid?

“Don’t feel like you have to get a bid straight away – the fund will still be available next year too.  You can look at the bigger picture and plan for the future so you can get a stronger application in and then events are more likely to be successful.”
