As my two years as your sports sabbatical officer come to an end, I’m feeling a mix of pride, gratitude, and excitement for what’s next, both for me and the incredible student community here at Manchester Met that I’ve been lucky enough to represent.

These past couple of years have genuinely been life-changing. Together, we’ve championed student welfare, broken taboos, and created spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and celebrated.

🌟The highlights

One of the biggest highlights during my role would have to be SHAG Week (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance). It was our biggest and boldest one yet! We had a record-breaking three full STD test completions (the most ever for a northern-based campaign like this).

Here’s what else we achieved during the week:

• Handed out 3,600 condoms (yes, really), and ran all sorts of fun, educational stuff like “Guess the Condom,” which got 225 of you involved.
• Held a clay boob pot-making session. 50 of you came along, got creative, and had some brilliant chats around body confidence and sexual health.
• We worked closely with the LGBTQ Foundation, connecting 65 students with support and advice. That just shows how much more open and empowered we’ve become to reach out for the help we need.
• We had an incredible chat with Grace, a sexual health educator from Brook where we tackled the tough topics and helped break down some of the lingering taboos around sexual health.

 

But it wasn’t all campaigns and awareness weeks. Varsity was wild — emotional, loud, and full of pride. The final score didn’t go our way, but the vibe? Unmatched.

Everyone showed up, gave it their all, and made it a day to remember.
