University is just around the corner, and with it comes one of the most exciting moments for many first year students, Freshers Week!

However, if the traditional Freshers Week isn't necessarily for you, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy your first taste of Manchester. One of these options is the Alternative Freshers Week, where nine different societies from both Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester come together to provide a unique experience for a variety of students.

What’s on?

We'll be starting off the week with a couple of ice-breakers including meeting everyone at Pub/Zoo on Saturday 17 September and then our weekly Pub Quiz on Sunday 18.

On Monday 19 we have our first themed night at the Zombie Shack, Tiki Rock! There will be giveaways and prizes, as well as fire performances from Manchester's local group Whitworth Fire!

On Tuesday 20 we'll be visiting Manchester's rock venue, Satan's Hollow! With its gothic decorations, good music and incredibly cheap drinks, it's bound to be a fun night!

There will also be plenty of opportunities to talk to all of the societies throughout the week, however, on Wednesday 21 at our alternative Freshers Fair, you'll be able to chat with us individually and ask us any questions about how to get involved in the society and ask us about any of the events throughout the week.

Thursday 22, we'll be reintroducing our themed nights with Club de Muerto at Underdog. Only two minutes away from campus, we'll be hanging in Black Dog Ballroom's very own Dia De Muerto themed basement club. There will be face painting, piñatas, giveaways and prizes throughout the night.

On Friday 23 we'll be hosting our BitterSweet night at Zoo, a night full of Kerrang classics, emo flashbacks and nu-metal bangers. All the stuff you loved as a young teenager and still secretly do!

On Saturday 24 we'll be hosting our traditional pub crawl through five of our favourite alternative bars before ending the night at Zoo for the RAWKUS Manchester launch party! Come down for the best alternative music, cheap drink deals and the famous RAWKUS girls! And to finish off the week we'll be having a Netflix and Chillout where we'll be getting some food and watching films that you get to choose.

We'll be meeting everyone for all of our night time events at 19:30 at Pub/Zoo before we head off to our other main events. You can find out more about all of our events here:

And feel free to message any of the societies linked in the description if you want to talk to us about anything!

Which societies are involved?

All the societies that will be involved throughout the week include the MMU Rock Society, MMU Gamers Society, MMU Vague Society, MMU LGBT+ Society, MMU Anime Society, MMU K-Pop Society and the MMU Skate Society. There will also be our friends from the University of Manchester including the UoM Rock Society and the UoM Comic Collective.

The Alternative Freshers Week is a fantastic opportunity to meet people who share the same interests while experiencing a range of fun and unique events. We're all super friendly and always encourage diversity and inclusivity. And with such a range of different interests, it makes our collaborations truly special.
