Mature students - Welcome is for you, too

Welcome is the biggest week of every student’s year – no matter what year you’re studying, and The Union hasn’t forgotten about those of you who might not be all about the parties and the club nights.

There’s loads of stuff happening throughout Welcome that caters to all students at Manchester Met, from first years to postgrads, students with children and mature students.

We’ve put together this guide for those of you who still want to get involved, but maybe on a more relaxed scale. Mature students, this one’s for you.

 


 

Sunset Yoga

When?

- Daily across Welcome Week

Where?

- The Union, Studio 1

 

Could you get any more relaxed that a yoga session in front of the fantastic views The Union’s got of Manchester?

Trained yoga instructors from the University will help you get zen and guide you through the sessions, allowing you to unwind from any stress or worries you may have about the upcoming year.

We can’t think of a more perfect way to start (and end) your Welcome Week. Tickets for this event are totally free, but we recommend getting yours booked soon so you don’t miss out.

 


 

Commuters Chat and Chill

When?

- Various dates

Where?

- The Union, rooms 6 & 7

 

We know most of you mature students won’t be living in halls with the rest of the first years. You might even be commuting to us from another city, and if that’s the case, we’ve got the perfect event(s) for you.

We know that being a mature student, as well as being a commuter might make you worry about making friends, but the three sessions we’ve got especially for you guys will help you make new friends and build connections with those who’re in the exact same position as you.

Like we said, there’s three of these sessions (25, 27 and 29 September), so don’t stress if you can’t make the first – there’s plenty of time for you to get involved.

Plus, there’s no tickets needed for this event, just turn up.

 


 

Manchester Walking Tours

When?

- Various dates

Where?

- Always in and around Manchester City Centre, focussing on a different route each time. Starting at The Union

 

Our walking tours have proven a success with you guys’ time and time again and they’re also the perfect way to make new friends, learn something new and get your steps in.

We’ve got three walking tours this year for you to come along to (25, 28 and 29 September), all focussing on a different cultural aspect of our city each time.

Each tour is run by award-winning professional tour guides who really know their stuff.

Expect to immerse yourself in topics surrounding the Suffragettes and how the entire movement was born in Manchester, the world-famous Manchester music scene with visits to iconic sites relating to Oasis and The Smiths, as well as an hour a half walk exploring the vast history of the city itself.

Manchester’s a wealth of history and culture so if you fancy getting some exercise as well as getting your culture fix, then get your free ticket booked in advance as places are limited.

 


 

Mature Student Mixer

When?

- Monday 25 September, 18:00 – 21:00

Where?

- The Union, Conference Suite

 

As well as everything else in this article, we’ve got an event solely dedicated to you mature students.

We’ve got three walking tours this year for you to come along to (25, 28 and 29 September), all focussing on a different cultural aspect of our city each time.

Whether you’re a brand-new starter, or returning to us for further study, come along and meet other students exactly like yourselves.

There’ll be free mocktails, board games and the perfect opportunity to make some new pals.

You also don’t need a ticket to get involved, just bring yourself and get stuck in.

 


 

Kids Lunchtime Club & Kids Afterschool Club

When?

- Monday 25 September, 16:00 – 18:00 & Saturday 30 September, 11:00 – 13:00

Where?

- The Union, Conference Suite

 

If you’ve got little ones and still want the chance to meet other students and get involved in Welcome – don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

We know that starting or continuing with your studies whilst looking after children can be a difficult balancing act, so we’ve got two Kids Clubs on throughout the week.

Both are designed to let you bring your little ones across with you when they’ve finished school or when you’ve got some spare time during your hour.

Each session will have fun and engaging activities and games for the kids, as well as providing you with the perfect opportunity to meet other students in the same position as you.

There’s also no tickets needed for this event either, so don’t worry about having to book in advance (we know this can be hard with little ones sometimes, too) just turn up and get involved.

 


 

Movie Night

When?

- 1 October, 19:00

Where?

- The Union, Main Hall

 

The definition of a relaxed night in. We’re hosting a move night to round off Welcome Week in our Main Hall and you’re invited.

There’ll be popcorn, candy floss and treat bags available for you to get your ultimate cinema experience.

The bar will also be open if you fancy a drink – no worries if not though, this even is for everyone, no matter what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for.

The film is to be confirmed, so keep your eye on the event posting if you fancy coming along, and don’t worry about a ticket either – you won’t be needing one of them.
