What is an officer?

Who are the student officers?

The Student Officers are five students paid to work full time to lead the Union and create real change in the education sector. This opportunity can either be taken as a year out from your degree (similar to a placement year), or as a graduate job.

Students at Manchester Met vote through a democratic election every year to choose the Student Officers. In other words, the elections decide who will go on to become directors of the organisation, trustees of the charity, and represent all 38,000 students at MMU. Officers can be in their positions for a maximum of two years, however, they must rerun in the next election for the second year.

The roles are full time (9-5 Monday to Friday) and consist of the following five positions:

Who can run for the positions?

Any student at Manchester Metropolitan University can run for these positions when nominations open during term two. Whatever year you’re in, whether you’re a postgrad or an international student – you’re eligible to stand in the student officer elections.

What do officers do in their roles?

The officers work to be a voice for students and to represent them, as well as lobby for things that students care about . Officers can run campaigns and events that create positive changes on our campus. They can propose new policies, work with departments across the university to share students’ perspectives and work with university leaders on big decisions that will affect students.

Officers get a lot of support from all the staff at The Union and will receive training when they start their role to help them carry out these duties.
